As a winter storms works its way toward Hampton Roads, local leaders have announced closures and cancellations for weekend activities. Much of the region is under a winter storm warning through Saturday morning.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit will reduce services due to winter weather. On Saturday, Jan. 11, snow routes will go into effect. HRT will operate on limited, hourly bus service while the Tide light rail and Elizabeth River Ferry will run every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The winter storm blowing across Virginia is causing some delays and cancellations in Hampton Roads. CNU will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. City offices, libraries, community centers and courts will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday. City employees with questions should check with their supervisors to determine their schedule expectations for the day.

There are nearly 1,000 children in foster care in Hampton Roads according to advocates, and there's been a steep decline in people willing to take kids in.

This active week of winter weather Hampton Roads is seeing has many people wondering how winter will pan out in the coming weeks and months.

This system will start initially as snowfall Friday afternoon and evening; however, freezing rain and sleet will mix in with the snow Friday night due to warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere.
