Two girls who authorities say were abducted by their father after he allegedly killed their mother, were found safe and the suspect taken into custody.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 4-year-old Rock Island girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert earlier this month was never abducted, and was safe at home the entire time, police said.

Below is the original story: The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert across much of Central and Southern California Wednesday as authorities searched for a man suspected of killing a woman in Kings County and abducting their two young daughters.

An arrest warrant was issued for a Rock Island mother after police said she falsely reported her daughter missing. She was arrested Thursday in Wisconsin.

Authorities searching for a man suspected of killing a woman and abducting their two young daughters issued an Amber Alert in the case Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for Arya Maldonado, 3, and Alana Maldonado, 2, who were reported missing from Hanford, California.

Detectives believe [the suspect] left the residence ... with two female children he shared with the victim, ages 2 and 3,” police said in a statement.

Detectives located the suspect and the children by tracking signals from both his cellphone and his slain girlfriend’s, which had gone missing, Kings County Sheriff David Robinson told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.

Police have recovered two kidnapped girls whose mother was shot dead at a residence in Hanford, California, on Tuesday. Earlier that day, the woman's father -- who lived down the street -- had called police after he hadn't heard from her.
