Measles cases are increasing in Texas and New Mexico.The United States has 133 reported cases so far this year, as of Tuesday. A child who was not vaccinated died from measles on Wednesday, the first death in an outbreak that began last month.

With measles cases rising in Texas and the death of a child, public health officials are unsettled. But Maryland appears to have a good vaccination level for protection.
“Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness, which can cause life-threatening illness to anyone who is not protected against the virus. During a measles outbreak, about one in five people who get sick will need hospital care and one in 20 will develop pneumonia,” Texas DSHS said in a news release.
The Tri-State area is experiencing a rise in several viral illnesses, with the flu being the most prevalent, according to a community announcement from Meritus Health.
