TALLAHASSEE — The Florida House and Senate openly rebuked Gov. Ron DeSantis’ call for a special session on immigration Monday by defiantly rejecting his slate of bills, then adjourning and immediately regrouping to consider alternative legislation approved by their leaders.

John Velebir, chair of Polk County's Republican Party, said he is "very" concerned about the rift between Gov. DeSantis and legislative Republicans.
The veto decision represents further decay of the quickly deteriorating relationship between the governor and Legislature.
Florida lawmakers are in Tallahassee on Monday for a special session called by Gov. Ron DeSantis to address illegal immigration.
Florida does not need to “duplicate the functions of U.S. Immigration and Customs and create a mini-me version of ICE,” said House Speaker Daniel Perez.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been locked in a contentious fight with the Republican-dominated state Legislature, which tried to strip away some immigration authority.
Although I can’t message it to the masses the way [DeSantis] can, I feel very comfortable with the position of the Legislature,” the Miami lawmaker said.
"The veto pen is ready," he posted on X Wednesday, after having telegraphed earlier this week that the bill was doomed.
