Alex Soros, the son of Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros, met Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka. The development comes in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump freezing all financial aid abroad – including to Yunus’ interim government in Bangladesh.

The Awami League has been virtually out of the open political landscape since August 5, 2024, with most of its leaders and Hasina’s cabinet members either in jail on murder and other criminal charges or on the run at home and abroad.

Alam, who played a key role in the uprising that toppled Hasina’s government and led to her exile on 5 August last year, added that only Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and other “pro-Bangladesh” groups would continue their political activities in the country.

Awami League has announced a series of political programs, including a general strike and a nationwide blockade.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir recently said the reform agenda undertaken by the interim government could take 10 years and an unelected government must not continue for a longer period.

Soros and Yunus ahd also met in New York last year in October after the Nobel laureate took charge following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime.

This is the second meeting between Alex Soros and Muhammad Yunus in three months. The duo had met in New York in October - weeks after Yunus took charge following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime.
