The Los Angeles Police Department has arrested two individuals on Tuesday who admitted to setting fires outside of the wildfire zones.​

Los Angeles authorities have arrested a man after a brush fire broke out in the Griffith Park neighborhood on Monday afternoon, according to the LAPD.

Two wildfires ignited early Tuesday in San Diego, California's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The Lilac Fire had burned about 20 acres at a moderate rate of speed and was zero percent contained, Cal Fire’s San Diego department said in a statement posted on social media.

LAPD Cmdr. Steve Lurie, who oversaw the West Bureau by the UCLA campus, will take over UCLA's Office of Campus Safety in February.

He spent 27 years with the LAPD, completing his career with the department as the assistant commanding officer of the West Bureau.

Two people were arrested for arson in separate incidents just outside the fire zone on Wednesday, according to the LAPD. In one incident, a citizen extinguished a fire in a tree and detained an arson suspect, police said. That suspect admitted to starting the fire because he "liked the smell of burning leaves," police said.

On Sunday, first responders made some significant progress on multiple fires burning in Los Angeles County after more than a week's worth of severe red flag weather created some of the worst wildfires in the region's history.

The department is down hundreds of officers from its 2019 ranks and projects that it will continue to dwindle in fiscal year 2025.

"We were turning him over to LAPD because he was dressed like a fireman ... time" that local officials are "eager to prosecute" them if necessary. Last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom deployed National Guard members to aid with public safety efforts.

The LAPD hasn't made any statements mentioning "persons of interest." The LA Fire Department said it is still investigating the cause of the fires.
