A bold new vision for the Champions League was launched this season. It has involved more games and more money for European soccer’s elite in a rebuttal to the threat of a controversial breakaway super league.

Liverpool have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League and will likely finish top of the pile. The Reds beat Lille 2-1 at Anfield to remain in pole position as the expanded group stages draw to a close. However, Barcelona beating Benfica 5-4 meant they have not officially sealed top spot yet.

Barcelona’s spectacular fightback against Benfica meant Liverpool would have to wait another week to be confirmed winner of the league phase of the new look Champions League.
