A 35-year-old man camping in a remote Montana forest was found killed in his tent following a vicious attack initially suspected of being a bear mauling, authorities said. Victim Dustin Kjersem went camping northeast of Big Sky, Montana, on Oct. 10 with plans to meet a friend the next day, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said.

A Montana man was found dead in a tent by a person who believed it was the result of a bear attack. But when investigators arrived, they discovered that the man had been the victim of a homicide. The body Dustin Kjersem, 35, was found north of Big Sky, Mont., on Saturday, Oct. 12, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The victim, identified as Dustin Mitchell Kjersem, was found dead in a tent, about 2.5 miles up Moose Creek Road, north of Big Sky.

Dustin Kjersem sustained "multiple chop wounds," including to his skull, an autopsy revealed. His killer has not been found.
