Cousins of Erik and Lyle Menendez spoke out Thursday criticizing the Los Angeles district attorney's recent decision to oppose a new trial for the brothers, who have spent nearly 30 years in prison for the 1989 killing of their parents.

Family members of the Menendez brothers pushing for their release criticized the Los Angeles County district attorney's opposition to a new trial Thursday while saying they're "incredibly grateful" Gov.

"We conclude, in our informal response, that the court should deny the current habeas petition by the Menendez brothers," he said during a press conference Friday.

Relatives of Lyle and Erik Menendez are "thrilled" and "hopeful" after California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the state parole board to investigate whether the brothers would pose a risk to the public if they are released after nearly three decades in prison for the 1989 killing of their parents.

The family of Lyle and Erik Menendez said they were hurt and disappointed after the Los Angeles district attorney denied the killer siblings a new trial – while lauding their relationship with the leftist former prosecutor who pushed for the brothers’ release last year.
