A election in Canada’s British Columbia province was too close to call on polling day, leaving the left-leaning New Democratic Party’s majority in doubt while support soared for a party that has not ruled the region since before World War II.

The incumbent left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), in power for seven years, had won 40 seats and was leading in six while the right-leaning Conservative Party had won 40 and was leading in five. The Green Party had won two.

British Columbians have gone to the polls on an election day marked by torrential rain and high winds across much of the province.

The winners, who have their roots in Punjab, represent both the NDP and the Consevative Party, the two main contestants in the fray. Last time the BC assembly had 9 candidates of Indian origin
